PORTLAND, Maine (July 1, 2021) - The Black Box on Washington Avenue, Portland’s first repurposed shipping container and retail incubator, is excited to announce the opening today of its newest tenant this summer: Betoken CBD, a breakout wellness brand that specializes in all-natural supplements and body care products whose sole mission is to make adult life easier.

What originally launched as Good Jane in 2018 and rebranded as Betoken CBD in early 2021, the company was founded by Liz Kirby to solve and manage the stress of "adulting" in a more natural way. Combining intuitive packaging design, effective ingredients, and a keen sense of storytelling, Betoken CBD aims to add value to the lives of modern-day women.

“As I initially explored the CBD products available on the market, a few things stood out to me: first, there was nothing on the market designed with a woman in mind - everything felt very masucline, very medical or had a cannabis leaf on it,” said Liz Kirby, founder and owner of Betoken CBD. “The other thing was that all of these products were claiming to accomplish different things. The same product that could help you focus could also help you sleep. CBD is amazing, but it's not a cure-all. However, from my background in acupuncture, I knew there were botanicals that could target different issues like sleep and different types of pain, so I sought out to make beautiful products that contained a blend of CBD and botanicals, to directionalize the products to solve different problems, effectively.”

Prior to launching her career as an entrepreneur, Liz Kkirby was a practicing attorney who wanted to turn her passion for helping others into a purposeful brand. From this drive to build a business on her own terms, Betoken CBD was born.

“We were one of the first companies to combine CBD with other botanicals, and it's something we pride ourselves on now, and why I believe our products are so effective and what keeps our customers coming back month after month.”

Betoken CBD plans to have rotating in-store offerings that do not exist on the website, with more wellness items added on a regular basis. They will also be partnering with other local makers: kicking off with a promotion with Alice Yardley, a contemporary handbag designer also based in The Black Box.  Keep an eye on Instagram for updates on this promotion along with upcoming ones this summer and fall.

“We don't have a ton of products, so a small space is perfect for the brand, and the location cannot be better here on Washington Avenue,” continued Kirby. “It is so ideal for me to be able to talk to our customers and potential customers in person, because so many people still have questions about CBD. I can't wait to talk to people daily and try to help solve their "adulting" problems! I think our CBD products will be a perfect addition to the block.”

Betoken CBD will be open Wednesday - Sunday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Follow along for updates and learn more via the business Instagram page @betokencbd

The Black Box opened in November 2018 with leases designed to be flexible and to accommodate business owners who want space to test a concept or provide street-front retail space without a long-term commitment.  Read more about The Black Box concept and mission here.
